Aeolus himself was king of the island of Aeolia and befriended Odysseus when his crew was stranded on the island. The friendship led to Aeolus bagging up all the winds except a gentle westerly wind, which would help Odysseus get home (this Aeolia was located near Sicily, and in real life is part of the Lipari Islands). The meaning of the name Aeolus is nimble – quite suitable for the “Keeper of the Winds”. He was assigned this task by Zeus, the King of the Gods. Although Aeolus is sometimes considered a mortal and otherwise known as a minor god, his legacy as the master of the winds holds to this day. Aeolus was a name given to three mythical characters, but their myths are deeply intertwined in such a fashion that the characters are often difficult to tell apart.
